SHIT & SHINE

The musical brainchild of one of our favourite producers Craig Clouse and featuring collaborators from the U.K. and Texas.

FACEBOOK EVENT

Shit and Shine began as a noise and hard electronics project and later moved into more eclectic and sometimes danceable sounds. Shit and Shine's 2004 debut album, You're Lucky to Have Friends Like Us, introduced the sense of humor, as well as cheeky samples and numerous drummers, that set Clouse apart from other noise and experimental acts around at the time. Proving to be a prolific producer, he issued a slew of releases on the Riot Season label throughout the mid- and late 2000s. His productions started to resonate with industrial and noise revival sounds from the likes of Powell and Russell Haswell in 2012 and beyond. Powell subsequently signed Clouse to his Diagonal label, and Clouse released a four-track EP in 2013. He followed this up with the full-length Powder Horn in 2014. With 2015's 54 Synth-Brass, 38 Metal Guitar, 65 Cathedral, Clouse incorporated dance elements - as well as jazz, funk, and Krautrock - into Shit and Shine's music, while that year's Chakin' compilation gathered Sun Ra and Miles Davis-inspired tracks recorded for Clouse's Tuesday Jazz Chat series on YouTube. Later that year, Clouse moved to Editions Mego for Everybody's a Fuckin Expert, which blended noise, techno, funk, and dub. Shit and Shine remained unpredictable with 2016's grindcore-influenced Teardrops and the following year's Some People Really Know How to Live, one of Clouse's most dancefloor-oriented release yet.

We've always known Shit and Shine's Craig Clouse to have a pretty good sense of humor - who else would name their tracks Love Your Hair - Hope You Win!, No Darling It's A Pentagram and Creepy Ballerina? But this latest endeavour is the shit, quite literally. The Texan noise alchemists released in 2017 his last LP on Diagonal called Total Shit, which is described by the label as "the definitive $hit and $hine album" with "hot mutations of rock 'n' roll, soft rock boogie and fizzing electronic muck across 35 minutes." There's more - Total Shit is sounding even more dancefloor-friendly than the band's debut full-length on Diagonal, 2014's Powder Horn. The crap record's artwork by Diagonal mainstay Guy Featherstone is one of our favorite album covers of 2017.

"Shit and Shine's sidestep from percussion-led, bunny rabbit rock ensemble performance-based glee to ultimate heavy fools of the sticky dancefloor remains one of the more inspiring turnarounds in recent years. Shit and Shine have wasted no time clearing away the rubbish whilst cutting up their own path towards giddy bass heavy shape shifting dance mutations. Snapping the twigs of disco, hurling clouds of exquisite dissonance, mangling modulations, boiling beats, twisting tweaks this is a crew that will throw anything at the wall, and you." Editions MEGO

Take a deep breath, avantgardisten: new Shit and Shine 12" out on DIAGONAL RECORDS soonish. its pretty pretty fuckn spesh! followed by an LP on Rocket Recordings !!!
