Artist Bart Van Dijck (B, 1974) explores local folklore and cultural identity. His practice consists of video's, documentaries, drawings, sculptures, installations, performances and publications.

His interest in both the local and the exotic, folk traditions and pop culture is central to his work. He examines how the identity of a community is determined by the use of symbolism and rituals.

For his solo “WAKING UP THE BEAR”, Belgian artist Bart Van Dijck presents a new sculpture, an installation and a selection of masks that have appeared as props in previous videos and performances.

The exhibition is inspired by the bear who wakes up from hibernation, thus announcing the end of winter and initiating the celebration of carnaval. It hints at reoccurring themes in the oeuvre of the artist, such as cultural identity and folk traditions.

On occasion of this exhibition an artist book will be published in limited edition at the Frans Masereel Centre. It is an account of a trip to the Romanian Bacau district, known for its tradition of "dancing bears".
