Steve Strong / Laurence Wasser // Horrid Counterparts

22 mars 2018

Free

Café Central 14, Rue Borgval - 1000 Bruxelles

Laurence Wasser (FR)

(…)Wasser lays down some highly active, clanging, dissonant noise-dance freakout action, executed with the precise, acute beatdown style of the Ex, Nomeansno, Contortions, or (it’s a stretch) Public Image Ltd. Unforgivingly steep, brutal dance-“punk” of an immediate, raw nature."

Laurence Wasser is a very interesting band from Belgium. If you try to categorize their music I wish you good luck. The band itself calls it no-wave and primitive disco. On these two EP’s you will hear a strange eclectic sound with elements of new wave, post-punk, rockabilly, surf, lo-fi indie pop and indeed no wave. The mood of the music goes from melancholy to nervous, but always with a strange twist and with a lot of energy."

Born in France, Laurence is a self-taugh musician active since the early 2000s. He has been playing under different monikers, releasing tracks on various independent labels and opening for bands like ESG, James Chance, Georges Leningrad, The Skull Deffects… An eternal nomadic diletante, Wasser tends to swap instruments and places from one project to the next, and over the years people have seen him with a band performing jerky punkdance tracks, playing tom tom drums in the primal duo Two Apes and lately  as  a one man act playing castanuelas with a looper.
He has just put out an album on Atomic bongos and will release a tape of his solo material on Kitchen leg this Spring. Laurence is on tour between March 21st and mid-April 2018

Steve strong (UK)

... is a one man arsenal of beats, tapped guitar and lush, texural melodies. His music is as witheld as it is grandiose, as skeletal as it is layered, equal parts shimmering and pulsing. It glimmers, swings and explodes in all the right places, sliding gracefully from one section to another, played as tightly as it is loose and free. Steve's ability to bridge the gap between technical ability and captivation is completely instinctual, tattoed onto his musical concious like the art on his body. His music seems to encompass many different styles without feeling contrived or forced, every strand of inspiration in steve's music is carefully placed and melted. This music will not be held down!'
